1985 Football Team

2nd State, Class 1A

The 1985 Greyhounds were the first team in SSHS football to compete in the state playoffs making it all the way to the state finals.  On November 30, 1985, on a rain-soaked field at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the team experienced a heartbreaking 13-12 loss to defending state champion Rock Port in the class 1-A championship game.  The Greyhounds lost only one regular season game in the 1985 campaign – a 14-6 setback to Santa Fe -- finishing second in the I-70 Conference.  The team avenged the loss by beating Santa Fe in the quarterfinals 21-0 and picked up its second shutout in post-season, in another 21-0 decision, by defeating Springfield Greenwood.  The Hounds accumulated a total of five shut-outs during the 1985 season. The offense averaged 38 points per game while the defense gave up just over 4 points a contest.  The ’85 team finished with a 10-2 record.  The Greyhounds had 21 positions make All-Conference from Honorable Mention to First Team followed by 8 All-District players and 5 who were All-State.  One Greyhound made Honorable Mention All-American, the first ever at SSHS.
