The 1959-60 men’s basketball team was led by second-year coach Ken Dyer and were the winners of the Western Missouri Conference with an 11-1 record. The Hounds team took first place in three tournaments – Concordia, Knob Noster and the Western Missouri Conference tournament at Wellington – and earned trophies in two additional tournaments. The team ended their successful season as the runner-up in the Missouri State Class M Regional tournament.
Each starting member of the team was high point man at one time during their season. Doug Schelp was chosen by the Kansas City Star for the All-Star team and Bob Vickrey was chosen for the second team; both were Hounds co-captains. Vickrey went on to play basketball for Kansas City National College. Several SSHS individual and team records are still held by this group of athletic and productive players.
