Coach Joe Mitchell 1968-1979

Joe Mitchell was an instrumental cog in the Greyhounds football and basketball teams’ successes in the early to mid-70’s as an assistant coach.  The football team claimed two conference titles while Joe was coaching including a #5 state ranking in 1971 and a #9 ranking early in 1972.  Defeating state-ranked College High in football in 1971 played a big part in the Hounds 1-A state ranking.  With an 8-1 season record, the Hounds missed making the state playoffs by 8 tenths of a point and the College High team that had lost to the Hounds went on to win the 1971 1-A state championship.  The basketball Hounds won the regional tournament in ’72 and were conference champs in ’74 with guidance from the excellent coaching staff.  Joe first came to Sweet Springs in 1968 to teach 8th grade.  He then served as the elementary principal until 1979.  His collegiate background includes a B.A. in Sociology from St. Benedict’s College followed by a Masters of Elementary Education and an Education Specialist degree in School Superintendency from UCM.
