Coach John Johnson 1970-1977

Coach John Johnson graduated with a BA in Physical Education in 1969 from the University of Northern Colorado where he was the starting quarterback and punter on the football team and a three-year letterman.  To begin his 40-year coaching career, Ballard High School in Butler, Missouri was first up for this teacher and coach.  In 1970, Coach Johnson came to Sweet Springs taking over a third year football program that quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the I-70 Conference.  From 1971 to 1975, SSHS football was ranked #3 in winning percentage in the state of Missouri which includes all classifications.  Johnson coached basketball for 4 seasons for the Greyhounds and 6 seasons of football and baseball.  During that time he obtained a Masters degree from CMSU and a MSE in Athletic Administration.  Following his time in Sweet Springs, John taught and coached at Greeley Central High School in Colorado.  He was involved in football (head coach 1976-78), was the head baseball coach (1981 – 93) winning the state American Legion baseball title in 1993 and was the head golf coach at Central (1985 – 2008)  with his team bringing home the state golf title in 2005.  Coach Johnson recently was named to the University of Northern Colorado’s 50-year team as a punter.
